Swallowtail Butterfly Card

Have you forgotten about your Swallowtail stamp?  It debuted last spring and did so well that this beautiful butterfly returned in the 2013-2014 Annual Catalog for Stampin’ Up!  Although I have not used it recently, I knew it was the perfect stamp for an amazing birthday card.

You cannot live without this stamp!  It is perfect for any occasion: birthday, wedding, bridal shower, thank you, thinking of you, new beginning.  Did you know you can stamp two of them and adhere them back to back for a 3D butterfly.  What about adding four and hanging them from the ceiling.  Don’t miss out on all this stamp has to offer, order it now if you don’t already own it!

Here’s the skinny on making this card:

  1. Cut a 6″x6″ piece of Crushed Curry card stock, score in half to 3″x6″.
  2. Cut a Whisper White layer 1/8″ smaller than the base (2 3/4″ x 5  3/4″, that’s 1/8″ on each side).
  3. Prior to matting the White, stamp the Swallowtail in Staz On Black ink twice, hanging off of the page. It is imperative that you use Staz On permanent ink so that it does not bleed when you add color.
  4. Get out your  Wisteria Wonder, Pool Party and Crushed Curry stampin’ write markers and start coloring the butterfly.  Tip: I used a little bit of Island Indigo to shade a few dark areas.
  5. After you finish coloring add a thin layer of Crystal Effects to the entire butterflies.  To apply, run the tip of the bottle over the card stock lightly touching the card stock, keeping constant contact with the paper.  This will slightly displace the glue so that it has raised parts and deep parts.  It creates amazing texture and after it dries you will have a glossy shine.  You do not want to skip this step- it makes a world of a difference in this butterfly.
  6. Finish off the card with a round of Gold Baker’s twine, tie a bow and adhere the White to the Curry card base.
  7. Stamp your sentiment on the inside of the card on another Whisper White card layer.

It may be hard to see the shine on this card because fluorescent lights don’t do paper crafts justice, but I guarantee that using Crystal Effects will take your card from bland to beautiful.

A Swallowtail Mother’s Day Card

I love the Swallowtail stamp. It is beautiful. It makes a perfect Mother’s Day card. The card base is Whisper White Card stock.  I used the Large Scallop Edgelit to cut out a crumb cake scallop for the edge of the card. I stamped the Swallowtail in Crumb Cake ink to coordinate. I used Sassy Salutations (my go to greetings set, have you noticed?!) in Calypso Coral so it would stand out. I tied a Pink Pirouette Ribbon around the card. Done. So easy, so pretty.

I wrote a little Mother’s Day note inside.  {Check out the new background. I put a colored cardstock on my 6 cube organizer so it would have colored backing.  I love it! I’ll post a picture of the whole organizer soon. I am in the process of renovating my craft room and its coming along slowly.}

Swallowtail Tutorial

Beautiful, right?

This Swallowtail stamp is wonderful. It makes beautiful cards.  I posted this card earlier, but wanted to give some instruction and pointers on making it work.

1. Buy WOOD MOUNT. I usually buy clear mount stamps, but for these large background stamps, I spring for wood mount.

2.  Use STAZON ink.  It doesn’t bleed, dries quickly, and is prefect for coloring over.

3.  Use texture. Because the stamp is so rich looking, extra texture from different embossing folders gives the card even more punch.

4. Emboss with clear embossing powder AFTER coloring in. The clear embossing powder gives it a shiny, glossy look and texture as well.  Color in your image with Stampin’ Markers and blender pens, then restamp over the image (as close to the original image as you can) with Versamark, cover with clear emboss powder, tap off excess and heat set.

5. Cut out your image and mount with Crystal Effects.  Crystal Effects is quite possibly the strongest adhesive I have ever used. It is wonderful. Use it! All the time.

6. Coloring.  Start with the marker to paper near the center.  Use a blender pen as you work outward to create dimension and more than one saturation level. I color on my clear blocks and use a blender pen to pick up the color and transfer it to my project.

I hope these tips are helpful in creating your project.

The Lovely Swallowtail Butterfly Stamp

I am in love with the Stampin’ Up! Swallowtail Background stamp, featured in the 2013 Spring Catalog.

swallowtail stamp

For this card I used the following supplies:

  • Basic Gray Card stock
  • Basic Black card stock
  • Whisper white card stock
  • Stazon Ink
  • Midnight Muse Ink
  • Swallowtail Stamp (129213 Wood)
  • Sassy Salutations Stamp Set
  • Large Rhinestones
  • Paper Snips Scissors
  • Snail Adhesive

  1. Card base is Basic Gray 4 1/4 x 5 1/2.
  2. Stamp two Swallowtails with Stazon Ink on Whisper White Card stock (4 x 5 1/4 for the base butterfly, 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 for the second butterfly.  Cut out the stamped butterfly on the larger piece.
  3. Adhere the base Whisper White butterfly to the card 1/4 inch from the top.  Adhere the 4 1/4″ wide x 2″ high basic Black card stock to the base.
  4. Stamp Congratulations with Midnight Muse onto the Whiper White piece 4 1/4″ x 1 1/2″ piece. Adhere to Basic Black card stock.  Adhere Basic Black piece to card base.
  5. Put Snail adhesive on the body of the loose Swallowtail. Adhere over top of the Swallowtail body that is on the card base. Bend wing forward so it stands out.  Trim left side to fit the card size.  Add a rhinestone to butterfly body.

I recommend buying the wood mount stamps for these large background stamps.  The price difference is only a few dollars and it is worth having a permanent wood block base for stamping.

Done. WOW! Is this card stunning or what?!?!  I hope you make some wonderful cards with this stamp.  It is perfect for any occasion! Happy Stamping!!
