Can you hang art in the bathroom?

Yes, and you should! While I love wallpaper in a powder room or bathroom, art is a must. More often than not, I place art above the toilet. It’s the wall with enough space in a small bathroom with nothing else on it that needs a finishing touch.

Here are some common sizes of art for over the toilet:

  • 12×12
  • 11×14
  • 16×24
  • 2- 12×12 pieces
  • 18″ or narrower

OPTION 1- Hang two pieces of art over the toilet

OPTION 2- Hang one larger piece of art over the toilet, but keep it narrower than the toilet. Add a decorative box on the back for storage.

Here’s a general guideline:

  1. Consider the wall space: Measure the width and height of the wall space above the toilet. This will give you an idea of how much room you have to work with.
  2. Proportion: The art piece should fill a significant portion of the wall space without being too large. A good rule of thumb is to aim for the art to be about two-thirds the width of the wall space.
  3. Eye level: Hang the art at eye level, typically around 57 to 60 inches from the floor, so it’s easily visible and aesthetically pleasing, but you can go lower above the toilet or use two pieces stacked.
  4. Multiple pieces: If you’re hanging multiple pieces of art, consider their arrangement. You can opt for a single larger piece or a gallery wall arrangement with smaller pieces.
  5. Style: Choose art that complements the overall style and decor of your bathroom. Whether it’s a framed print, a canvas painting, or a decorative wall sculpture, ensure it enhances the space.

Ultimately, the size of the art you hang over the toilet depends on personal preference, the dimensions of the wall space, and the overall design aesthetic of your bathroom.

What Height To Hang Art In a Bathroom or Powder Room?

Hang art above the toilet at eye level when standing (60″). If you are hanging one piece of art, the middle of the artwork should be at 60″ or slightly lower.

If you are hanging a grouping of two, the space in between the pieces should be at 60″ from the ground. Hang the two pieces 2″ – 4″ apart.
