Staircase Christmas Garland Guide
Looking to add a touch of Christmas cheer to your staircase this year? A garland is the perfect way to do it! In this guide, we will teach you how to choose the right garland for your staircase and how to install it.
We will also provide some tips on how to take care of your garland and make it last through the holiday season. Let’s get started!

HOW TO ATTACH GARLAND TO STAIRCASE RAILING
Whether you choose to use fresh or faux garland you’ll need to attach it to the railing so that it stays in place all season. There are a few ways to attach your greenery:
- garland ties
- zip ties
- twine
- ribbon
My preference is to use garland ties to secure the greenery to the railing every 4 feet or so. It has wire in it, so it’s easy to tie and twist and will stay in place.
- Starting at the top, hold garland in place and loop the tie over the garland stem and around the railing.
- Tie and twist garland tie.
- Add another tie about 2′-4′ down, at the spindle so that the tie won’t slide.
- Continue, overlapping the next garland strand about 1/2 way for fullness.
- Finish with a floppy ribbon bow in your color choice.

USING GARLAND TIES FOR BANISTER
These garland ties from Amazon come in a 12 pack in a few different colors to blend best with your garland and decor.

CHRISTMAS GARLAND ADD INS
You can display plain greenery on your stair garland, but I love add ins. It really helps to fill out the leaves and make it feel special with your favorite things.
For me, faux pomander picks mixed in remind me of Little Women, my favorite Christmas movie- the orange scene. It gives me all of the warm, fuzzy feels. I can hear the music and see the snowball fight!
Here are some optional Christmas garland add in ideas for your decor:
- lights
- brass bells
- fruit- oranges, pomegranate
- flowers- magnolia, poinsettia, berries
- ribbon

HOW MUCH GARLAND DO I NEED FOR A STAIRCASE?
Measure the banister of your stair railing, starting at the top and adding the lengths for the turn.
You will need approximately 1.5 to 2 times the feet of railing of garland so that you can overlap and give it a full look. This will depend on the quality of the garland, but if it is substantial enough, 1.5x should do the trick!
Best christmas garland for stairs
Here are the Christmas garlands that you don’t want to miss out on. They are the best value for money, but they sell out quickly, so order now! And if you missed it, make sure to get the back in stock alert so you can snag some.
My Favorite Ribbon for Christmas Garland

I LOVE adding ribbon to garland, mantle decor and the Christmas tree. It makes it feel expensive and refined.
I found this 1.5″ thick silky ribbon on Amazon in a variety of colors, coming in at 50 yards each, which is HUGE. I ordered dusty blue and moss green for this year’s decor. I’ll use the leftovers to tie a bow on gifts.
