Welcome! If you’ve new here on my blog, I’m April Waltrip, an interior design blogger + shopper extraordinaire. For this season’s One Room Challenge I’m making the Entryway of my dreams in our colonial style house in historic Williamsburg, Virginia.

THE ENTRYWAY
BEFORE

The entry is a window (well a door, really) into the rest of your home. And in so, it should be representative of what to expect throughout the other rooms. It’s a preview, a peek.

And unfortunately 8 weeks ago, our home entryway was lacking serious attention. It was time to give the entryway some attention. So the focus of this challenge was to make the entryway beautiful and functional.

While the entry is plain and clear, it collects cutter really easily. There isn’t a storage function to catch shoes, book bags, keys and everything that comes in the front door with our family members.

And that poor blue door that looks great on the outside, needs some serious help on the interior paint job.

So I’ve planned a stunning entry design that will reflect my style, a traditional nod to the home’s style and create a little bit of function. Keep reading to see the inspiration and the reveal!

INSPIRATION

For the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge, I found this amazing sky colored blue crane wallpaper and knew the rest of the room would be designed around it.

Navy blue pairs well with light blue, so I was on the hunt for a shiny, lacquered console table. And because the door opening is narrow, it had to be under 14″ in depth or it would impede the walkway.

It was a tall order to fill, but I knew it would come together beautifully.

Below is the inspiration mood board I made for our soon to be new entryway. I incorporated the blue crane wallpaper, navy blue console table, storage baskets and an interesting textured mirrors.

THE REVEAL: BOLD BLUE ENTRYWAY

Now that you’ve seen the before and the inspiration, are you ready to see the after? Let’s jump into the new bold, blue entryway.

WOW! It’s like my family is summed up in one photo. This area is now spunky and colorful instead of white and empty. 

The first view is the main wall to the right when you walk in from the front door. I love the contrast of the navy console table and the warm woven baskets against that amazing crane wallpaper. It packs the punch.

This exceptional crane wallpaper came from Wayfair, along with the console table which is Kate and Laurel.

The woven baskets are from Target’s Threshold line. And the wall is rounded out with the Grace mirror from Ballard Designs.

Lastly, the console is styled with a Kate Spade black and ivory striped lamp and vintage catch all bowl and candlesticks.

All of these things came from other rooms in my house to complete the entryway look. All of the sources are linked at the bottom of this post.

Here are a few more of my favorite views of the entryway.  I particularly love how the mirror catches the reflection of my favorite Thibaut emerald green wallpaper from the dining room.

Next, if you were following along on Instagram, you saw that I painted the front door with an extra can of Sherwin Williams Stardew I had laying around to see how it looked with the wallpaper.

News flash-it was too dark and leaned greenish gray. So , like a true DIYer I ran back out to my local Sherwin Williams store with a piece of the wallpaper and a fan deck to get a small pot of the perfect color.

I went with Sherwin Williams Stream in a semi gloss finish and it is spectacular! It was the perfect light and airy color to bring life to the space.

Let’s focus in on the wallpaper for a minute.

While I love everything about the new entry design, I did have a hang up. If you read week 5’s post, you know we had a few recurring health crises for my son. That certainly stalled progress and we didn’t tile the floors.

I’m bummed that they aren’t done for this reveal, but I haven’t abandoned the plan. In fact, there will be updates along the way as we work on tiling the entry.

Initially, I was going to paint the flooring like I did in the guest bathroom, but with little kids running around, it would be too difficult to keep them off of the floors for the drying time because it is at the foot of the stairs.

As with all things in life, sometimes you have to adjust and this is one of those times. Luckily, it is my own home not a client project, so things can take a back burner without issue. Check back to follow along with the progress!

CONCLUSION

Whew! When I look at our new entryway, I gasp and say “WOW” every time I see it. That wow feeling was 100% what I wanted out of the entryway.

I always ask my husband to weigh in on my choices (and then I do the opposite, kidding). But I’ve got to say that by this time around he trusted my design plan, let me run with it, came home from work and was impressed that it came together amazingly.

It was the biggest compliment that he appreciated the work and liked the outcome as much as I did. He says how great the wallpaper looks every time he comes downstairs. That’s the highlight of this whole experience!
